I began the research for my History Day Web site by examining the turning points in different countries. I chose to highlight India in its plight for independence from Great Britain, as an example of a turning point for the world. India achieved its independence through nonviolent means, unlike most countries. Mahatma Gandhi made this change possible, by leading his people and teaching them the concept of nonviolent protest using love, not hate. I decided to display the results of my research on a web page to help others understand the impact that Gandhi had on the world. I began the research for this web page by researching various web sites, to find a location that would host my site. I then searched the web to find various media clips that would portray Gandhi in his various struggles. In the following weeks, my father and I visited the Los Angeles Central Library in search of the necessary books and periodicals. There I discovered many articles about Gandhi's nonviolent methods as well as photographs depicting Gandhi in his various campaigns. I spent numerous hours photocopying old newspapers and magazine articles, and then scanning them into the computer. I also learned about Web site construction. I was fascinated by the graphics and design of various web sites. As I began to construct my site, I realized that Web site construction is far more difficult than it seems. Thus, I contacted my friend Jonathan who agreed to assist me with the HTML programming. I had the difficult task of reviewing numerous programming books in search of the correct HTML codes to use. Unfortunately, there were a few codes that were not in the reference books. Together Jonathan and I wrote the codes that were missing. Additionally, I researched how to build a guest book so I could receive feedback about my site. We then spent numerous hours placing video clips, sound clips, and pictures in their appropriate places. To get the optimum performance from my site you will need Real Audio Player, a set of speakers, and Internet Explorer. (We were having technical difficulties running the multi-media clips on Netscape.) I hope you enjoy my site and learn a lot. In the future I hope the Web site category will be expanded throughout the United States so that others throughout the world can benefit from their research. -- Rena |
