Even though Gandhi knew he would not be able to enjoy the outcome of his protests he continued to hold them. He found it in his heart to help the Untouchables when nobody else would. Gandhi frequently disobeyed the law in order to help others less fortunate. In the beginning his protests were brief and infrequent. As the years progressed, many others joined in his fight for equality in India. During a peaceful protest on the Sikh New Year, General Dyer orders his troops to open fire on the unarmed protesters. Gandhi reacts with words of sorrow, not weapons. This takes great strength not to retaliate. He does this because an eye for an eye just makes the whole world blind. There are many methods of acting against an authority. They may use violence and accomplish things, but by using brains not guns they accomplished more. Gandhi was also an inspiration to Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King held many rallies for the equality of blacks and whites. He helped to provide a better future for his children and the coming generations. He began challenging the unjust laws of the government and eventually won the right for blacks to be treated as equals. Now people are treated by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. This was King's dream for the future children of America. Both Gandhi and King provoked a revolution for equality. They went against what was "right" to provide a better future for the coming generations. |
